OUR TEACHING

 INTRODUCTION

The evolution in tango is directly related to the quality time a student dedicates to their practice. For instance, someone who dances for 1 year and visits practicas or milongas every week, can get a faster improvement than someone who only participates in classes for, let’s say, two years. Which means that, before you decide to start a regular tango class, it is important for both of us to know how much time you have been spending, or you intend to spend outside your class for your improvement, so that we  define better your student level. All group classes are guided by a dancing couple, that is, two teachers of the school.

METHOD

In TANGart, all teachers follow teaching methods proven to bring results, methods that have been in use for many years of valuable experience and suggested by recognized worldwide known maestros of argentine tango. Each level has been constructed to prepare you properly for the next one through a carefully guided learning process. Our fundamental goal is to create dancers who can share the dancefloor with enjoyment and respect during social tango nights. Even further, a student of our school is gaining, through time of studying and dedication, a complete vision of the tango dance and the culture that defines it and gets more and more mature by creating their personal “dancer identity”.

LEVELS

New Beginners, Introductory Level:

Your first tango steps! If you’ve never danced before andwant a first-time experience with tango, this is your level. Even if you are familiar with other kinds of dance, we suggest that you start with this zero level, because tango is very different from all other dances, as it is also a very demanding one on the technical level, so you need to get to know it correctly from scratch. By the end of this class level, you will be familiar with the form and function of the tango embrace, recognize the basic rhythm of the music and you will be able to dance a number of basic tango moves that allow you to take part in a milonga (social tango night). You don’t need to inscribe with a partner, as during the class there is a constant rotation of student combinations that form new couples all the time.

Beginners:

The goal of this level is to enable the students to move with ease on the dancefloor, after having improved their technical tools and experience compared to the first zero level. Moves that need to be mastered now are: moving in parallel and cross system, basic cruces, rebotes, ochos, medialuna, basic sacadas, basic ganchos, basic giro and simple ideas that can combine all the above in a flow. By this time, the close embrace as well as the open one are in use. Duringthislevel, we also make an introduction in tango vals and milonga. At the same time, the music is studied with a little more detail. By the end of this class level, students are able to recognize and practice all the milonga rules (codigos) of movement and behavior. Thislevelissuitableforstudentsthatalready have at least 6 months toa year of previous tango experience

Improvers:

Our goal here is to develop the ability to combine steps on your own. We work in the direction of improvising dance moves, as this is the main characteristic of tango that distinguishes it from other kinds of dance. We try to interpretate the music, changing the speed on moving the embrace. We also reinforce the circular use of movements, which is particularly helpful in the milonga dancefloor. The classes usually make use of both open and closed embrace.

Furthermore, the tango vals and milonga get more elaborated here, so that we are able to dance them in the milonga.

Given that your technique is evolving and you are already confortable with several moves, this improver level aims to consolidate your basic technique and provide you with some more complex dance moves, as well as the growing ability of combining them at the moment of dancing.

The students that can enter this level definitely need to spend time practicing tango also outside the class (practicing on their own and taking part in social practices). We also strongly advise you to follow a complementary technique class during this student level.

Advanced:

On this level we broaden our knowledge into more detailed aspects that influence our tango dance:

We develop our musicality conscience, by observing the particular character of each tango orquesta and working on ways to interpretate the special elements of tango music.

For doing this, we also elaborate on our technique precision and consistency, as well as the embracing tools we have in order to dance together and communicate the small changes we need in order to really connect to the music and to our sentimental expression.

We work on really complex combinations of steps that make use of our technique mastering, so that we keep it fresh and consistent all the time.

We get fluent in our role and responsibility within the dancing couple and we elaborate on the ways to be adaptive in all characters of social embrace.

This level is suitable for students who dance with frequency and dedication for at least 4 years, and who are active in the process of the milonga.

This levels aims to form mature dancing characters, able to discern and take part in all the aspects of argentine dance and culture (music, expressivity, respect, sharing, the ability to open our sentimental world to others, and of course the technique of the body and mind to achieve all the above). These dancers will eventually be prominent in the milonga for their maturity and quality of dance and manners. In this class level, you are highly encouraged to form stable dancing couples, so that you can practice the new tasks given or you weaker points more often outside the class.

During this level it is absolutely necessary to follow the complementary technique class.

Tango Technique for Men and Women:

The Technique classes are essential for all students that desire to have a deep knowledge of tango and a way to embrace with quality and make the movement really pleasant for themselves and their partners.

During the class, we provide you with personal exercises for the improvement of your balance, your body awareness and all the specific point of interest that a tango dancers needs to know.

Weobserveanddescribeinfulldetailthe use of bones and muscles in every tango move and work even more on the ones that present difficulties. Most of the exercises are ment to be repeated as often as possible in your own free time, so that we make sure they enter your body memory.

It is crucial to mention that a dancer’s technical improvement has no limit in a complex dance like tango, so starting with Technique classes already from your first years of studying will help you gain time and evolve faster. By the time you reach an advanced level, you will be feeling much more confident in the basic use of your body, so then you will be free to occupy yourself with the more specific expressivity and interpretation details that define you as dancer.
